just some stuff

Our washer bit the dust yesterday. It lasted many years, so I guess it was to be expected. We went and got another this morning - it seems to be a lot smaller than our other one, but it will work. Just have to tell my daughter to ease up on the huge loads she ususally does. So I only go about 2 1/2 sleep before I got up to go with hubby to get the washer. Now I have to stay busy or I'll just want to go back to sleep. I guess I could, but I hate sleeping the day away.

Speaking of number one daughter, she got fired this morning. She's been working at a place called Black Bear Diner. Yesterday she called in because she was throwing up all morning. They asked her to try and make it by 11:00. (she talked to them around 8:30) She threw up some more and fell asleep. When she woke up, it was after noon - she saw they had tried to call and she didn't return the call. So today they told her she was a no-call no-show and fired her. Whatever. She hated that job with a passion, and next week she's finishing her phlebotomy class so hopefully she'll be able to get something in that field soon.

We've been doing better giving Sammy treats. Yesterday he had cherry tomatoes and zucchini fresh from the garden. (but I wonder if that's what's giving him such horrible gas today...gag!)

I realized that the only shows I am making a point of watching this summer are three reality shows - Master Chef, and unexpectedly, Alone and Forged in Fire. Alone is a survival show - I think they started with ten guys, dropped off on an island in the Northwest, each in their own area with a small amount of gear and completely alone. They have to film themselves, no crew. There are four guys left after two weeks. It's pretty interesting to see the psychology of how they're handling it. It rains A Lot there, so there's that added stress. I think the next guy to go (they have satellite phones to use to tap out) will be the one (can't remember his name) who was talking about the mold growing on everything he has, clothes included.

And Forged in Fire is another elimation show with four different guys every week having to forge blades out of different types. I was pretty impressed, because I had no idea how that stuff is done. One week they had to use a big spring and another they had six small pieces of metal they had to fuse together. I'm completely surprised that I like this show as much as I do.

Oh, and we're also watching American Ninja Warrior. I do believe I'm turning into a dude!

I got to watch an episode of Alone. It's very interesting to watch -- I just couldn't stand to watch it for long because it's like all my fears in one show. Being alone, in the dark, 'monsters' around, having no food/water.

One guy left because a bear was hanging around - it took them a few hours to get him out. He could have been bear chow by then!

Yeek on the washer. Thank goodness you had enough money set aside to go out and immediately get a new one!

I think your daughter would have grounds to go to the labour board in regard to that dismissal (at least here in Canada she would) but since she hates the job anyway and will be looking for something in her field in a few weeks I guess that's neither here nor there. What an awful company though.

*hugs to Sammy*

Amazingly, we actually did have enough money for a new washer, but my poor husband had been saving it to have his truck painted so we just put it on a card anyhow. *sigh*

My daughter started at that restaurant when they opened and it's been beyond stressful for her ever since. I guess they haven't gotten into their groove yet, but glad she's out of there.

My washer is really old so I know it's just a matter of time.

I can't believe a diner expected an employee to come in with a stomach bug but it sounds like your daughter is better off not working there.

The forging show sounds really interesting.

We started watching the forging show because my son has been really interested in that kind of stuff. He's been collecting knives the last couple years and has set up a grinder to sharpen them. I finally have sharp kitchen knives...lol!

Mr Star watches 'Alone' too and I only know the guys by the monikers he's assigned them: Georgia (who Mr Star adores), Crying Guy, Tent Guy, and Cave Guy (tho maybe Crying Guy and Cave Guy are the same? Unsure!). And I was totally sympathetic at first because I thought they'd been out there for like, months on end. Vancouver Island is pretty wild, in places (ie severe lack of civilization). But then I found out that they'd only been out for 38 days and the prize is half a million dollars and suddenly I'm all, "Teach me how to live off the land! I'd miss you but not that much, no offense, not when we're cashing in my $500k check!"

Apart from the actual survival part, I think that's the kind of scenario where you have to be incredibly fond of your own company. And enjoy rain. *g* But I was really surprised that so many dudes tapped out so quickly & I would have liked to see more actual survivin', a la Survivorman.

Now that it's down to two, I so curious how long they'll last.

I've found it interesting that they don't mention the money that much - I guess the psychological challenge is such that the money has lost it's importance.
